Consumer Protection

There are many pros and cons to consumer protection. The Bureau of Consumer Protection's mandate is to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices. The Bureau enforces a variety of consumer protection laws enacted by Congress, as well as trade regulation rules issued by the Commission. Its actions include individual company and industry-wide investigations, administrative and federal court litigation, rulemaking proceedings, and consumer and business education. In addition, the Bureau contributes to the Commission's on-going efforts to inform Congress and other government entities of the impact that proposed actions could have on consumers. There are certain things that consumer protection looks out. It makes sure that the research is done so that the customer can be confident in the product that they are buying.

I think that consumer protection is a good thing. Due to the research and precautions that must be taken, many jobs are more profitable. Because of consumer protection my dad sends bussines to local garages who can do repairs and safetyt check the vehicles so that the consumer is protected and they do not get jipped.

Prisoner Abuse In Iraq

Prisoner abuse by U.S. personnel in Iraq was apparently not limited to the Abu Ghraib prison. The New York Times reported members of a shadowy U.S. military unit turned one of Saddam Hussein's torture cells into their own interrogation cell.
The paper said the so-called Black Room was part of a temporary detention site at the secret headquarters of the unit known as Task Force 6-26. Some of the abuse included beating prisoners with rifle butts and using detainees for target practice in games of jailer paintball.
The report is based on interviews with more than a dozen civilian and military Department of Defense personnel who worked with Task Force 6-26. Virtually all of them were granted anonymity to encourage them to speak candidly without fear of retribution.
The commander of the Special Operations Command said all the allegations will be taken seriously.

Elsewhere, police said a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol on a busy street in a mostly Sunni area of Baghdad killed at least six people and wounded 12. Across the city, drive-by shooters killed three people in a car. A rocket landed near a house, killing one occupant and injuring two others.

About 20 miles south of Baghdad, gunmen ambushed and killed a police major as he headed to work.
